One of the most popular side dishes in Mexican cuisine, prepared in a variety of ways, this staple will add a lot of flavor to any meal. In this article, we'll show you how to make refried beans at home in just a few simple steps. Whether you serve them as a side dish or as a main course, these frijoles are sure to delight your taste buds!
Before you start preparing this recipe, you'll first need to get your hands on some kidney beans. Don't panic, they're easily found in France, but in different forms.
So we've put together three recipes for you, to use depending on the beans you have on hand.
Fried Beans (Option 1)
Raw red kidney beans (found in supermarkets) - the most traditional
Ingredients
- 500g raw red beans
- half a red onion
- 4 cloves of garlic
- Coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
- Olive oil
Recipe
- Soak the beans in water.
Soak for at least 12 hours before cooking. - In a saucepan, cook the beans with salt, garlic and onion for about 30 minutes or until cooked through.
- Once cooked, put the mixture in a blender (or use a hand blender). Cover with the cooking juices (the same amount as the beans). Add the cumin and chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.
Fried Beans (Option 2)
Can of already cooked red beans (Bonduelle style)
Ingredients
- 1 can of red beans
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- half a red onion
- 2 cloves of garlic
- Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
- Olive oil
Recipe
- Rinse the beans (they are often sweet)
- Place the beans in a blender (or use a hand blender). Add a little water, or use natural chicken broth if you have it (the same amount as the beans). Add the cumin and chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.
- Finely chop the onion and garlic
- On a hot plate, heat some oil and fry the onion and garlic, then add the bean puree, stopping cooking once the puree begins to boil.
Fried Beans (Option 3)
Canned red beans (cidacos style)
Ingredients
- 1 can of red beans
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
- Olive oil
Recipe
- Place the beans and the canned juice in a blender (or use a hand blender). Add a little water or natural chicken broth if you have it. Add the cumin and chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.
- On a hot plate, heat some oil and add the bean puree, stopping cooking once the puree starts to boil.
The bonus tip
